Kim3’s sensitivity to environmental concerns is echoed in the beauty of old, solid-wood furniture. The patina acquired by wood over time is inimitable and makes each piece individual.

Because wood is a natural material and very much alive, it will react in response to atmospheric changes, especially humidity. Accordingly, extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity should be avoided in rooms that house fine furniture. These include being closely exposed to radiators, hot air vents, air conditioning vents or open windows.
Additionally, great care should be taken to insulate the furniture thoroughly when placing any hot object onto it. This includes candles, incense burners, strong heat producing lights, and any pots, pans or other food serving utensils.
Direct sunlight is especially detrimental to fine furnishings and may cause fading, cracks, splits, and/or warping
The ideal conditions for furniture include a stable atmosphere with a relative humidity between 40 and 70%, and a temperature range of 60 – 80o F.
In dry environments (humidity less than 40% most of the time) you should supplement the humidity with a humidifier, or by keeping a small open glass of water inside the cabinet (as Kim3 does).
